The stadium is operated by the team FC Ural Yekaterinburg. It is one of the 12 venues that will be used to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup and will also go by the name of Ekaterinburg Arena.

Originally built in 1957 it has now come under reconstruction to make it ready for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The reconstruction is necessary to comply with the FIFA requirement of seating capacity for 35,000. Within the stadium there will be restaurants a fitness centre and also fast foods outlets to cater for the spectators. Next to the ground is a parking lot that has 3200 parking spaces and a hotel is also being constructed nearby to be able to handle the influx of spectators wanting  to watch the games. Once completed the stadium will meet international requirements on evacuation, security and modern systems of access.

The stadium will have 3 types of seating which will including special seating for people with disabilities and areas for fans. In the east and west stand there will be an area of seating that will be covered by a canopy. It is designed to offer a high quality of service with active surveillance, telecommunications, video feeds and audio experience to help maintain a safe environment.

The solution the construction team came up with to reach the required 35,000 spectator seating, was to build temporary stands extending out from the original facade of the building. The arena will also have in addition to the extra seating, artificially heated turf and artificial irrigation, a press centre, 8 booths for commentators for tv and radio and also rooms for journalists to cover the matches.
